‘De Harmonie’ theatre complex, Leeuwarden

The whole of the ‘De Harmonie’ complex is a work of pure theatre. Typical theatrical elements have been employed in the design of the building, and not only in the performance spaces and for the stages but also in the entrance and the foyer. A cascade of stairs, surprising interior views, scenic effects, gold-painted columns, dramatically lit walls and glittering floors lend the theatre an aura of festivity. The semi-transparent facades ensure that the building also presents itself to the city in a dramatic manner. Each of the three auditoriums is distinctive in character. The main auditorium is a modern bonbonnière with large balconies and ‘windscreens’ that simultaneously serve as acoustic panels and lighting ornaments. The auditorium set in the middle is a black box, designed to be multifunctional. A plectrum-like volume with a vivid red stucco façade highlights the entrance.
