'De Klanderij' shopping centre, Enschede

It was high time that the introverted, post-war shopping centre should be replaced with a more vital complex that has a better relationship with the adjoining square. The design creates an open retail environment by making the display windows five metres high and establishing a spacious internal pedestrian route. Daylight (direct and indirect) reaches this mall from above. The boomerang-like circuit opens into a new shopping street, which leads back to the square. Above the shopping centre there are apartments that are accessible by car via a ramp. A roof garden creates a congenial residential environment right in the middle of town.
