Vision for Almere’s City Centre
The vision for Almere’s city centre is based on an analysis of Almere’s development following the completion of the ongoing transformation. The research focused on the programmes that must or could be accommodated in the centre, and in what kinds of settings. The research resulted in a proposal with four thematic zones that are largely extrapolations of what currently exists there: a zone with recreation, entertainment and culture, a commercial centre, a business centre and a civic centre, where the collective and public functions are concentrated. A high degree of functional intermixing prevents the evolution of four isolated zones. Undeveloped tracts of land and buildings that can absorb programmatic changes guarantee flexibility within the plan.
