Urban development plan for ‘Casa Nova’, Bolzano, Italy

The ingredients for this urban development plan are specifically local: the basis was provided by the parcellation of the land and the landscape of orchards. In order to retain the green character as far as possible, it was decided to create a compact development in the form of eight castelli, a reference to the traditional citadel-like homes of the gentleman farmers in the surrounding area. Each castello is composed of four buildings of varying height and size with a total of 120 dwellings around a communal garden. A cluster of amenities is situated in the middle of the plan area. The architecture is understated (especially on the park side), and the flowing angles of the rooftops and local materials merge seamlessly with the mountainous panorama.
