Martinus Nijhofflaan, Delft

The Martinus Nijhofflaan building is an urban landmark on an important intersection in the heart of South Delft. It contains a mixed use program consisting of retail on the ground floor, followed by 2 levels of parking garage above, and topped with apartments. The apartment types vary in size, typology and user. The first level of apartments connect to a south facing roof garden.

The height, scale and position of the building volumes fit into the surrounding urban fabric. The profiles of the two towers are terraced on the south side giving the building an iconic quality. This also provides light and visibility to the roof ter-races, loggias and balconies. The plinth includes a passage through the volume which connects the southern part of the neighbourhood with the mall and the tram stop on the north side of the Martinus Nijhoff Avenue.

The façade is highly layered and textured. For example, quotes of the poet Martinus Nijhoff are incorporated in the clad-ding material. These elements in the façade enable it to operate from various distances and at different scales, thus trans-forming the current anonymous location into an address with a distinctive identity.
