Block 23, IJburg, Amsterdam
Block 23 is a reinterpretation of an internalized urban block achieved by grouping three perimeter blocks around inner grounds filled with greenery. In order to realize the complete programme while keeping the communal central area as open as possible, it was decided to use a double row of peripheral construction. The outer row is oriented towards the street; the inner row towards the green courtyard garden. The block is divided into three sub-blocks, all with precisely the same programmatic and architectural specifications. Each sub-block has one high-rise element of eight storeys with apartments and a low-rise element of three storeys with single-family dwellings, self-build plots and its own parking space. The sub-blocks were elaborated by de Architekten Cie., VMX and the Architectengroep.
