Only a small portion of the extension and renovation of the concert building is visible aboveground. The facilities requiring most space are accommodated in a new basement. Only the reception space, ticket sales desk and foyer are housed in the new structure alongside the old building. At the ground-floor level the extension is minimal, but then the upper floor cantilevers out, covering over most of the pavement. The sharp delineation and the glazed façade augment the floating character of this elevated foyer overlooking the expanse of the Museumplein. Even though the new wing contrasts sharply with the old Concertgebouw in terms of the chosen materials and design, the rhythm, colour scheme and slope of the roof are also subtly in harmony.
