Essent head office, Den Bosch

The former PNEM building (C. de Bever, 1956) was extended and renovated by adding new wings to the rear of the castle-like structure. Although this drastically altered the scale and organization of the complex, old and new still form a harmonious whole thanks to subtle similarities correspondences in scale, formal idiom and roof structure. A ‘high street’ connects the wings with the original building and gives access to the office spaces and collective functions. The old courtyard has been transformed into a glass-covered atrium that serves as a foyer and restaurant for the conference rooms surrounding it.

Notable features

  • Restoration of municipal monument.
  • Geothermal generated renewable energy.
  • Highly insulated envelope reduces energy use.
  • Cooling ceilings, operable windows and adaptive and indirect lighting make energy efficient climate.
  • New atrium opens up monument, allows for social contact and generates heat regain.
  • Internal gardens enhance air quality.
  • Public square in front of building enlivens city.
  • Central station 300 m. reduces car mobility.
  • Corporate gardens allow rainwater harvesting and generate ample office environment.
