NDSM-wharf, Amsterdam

The NDSM-wharf on the northern banks of the IJ was once one of the largest and most modern shipyards in the world. The monumental ensemble of sheds, slipways and railway tracks still resonates a proud history. Today artists and entrepreneurs have developed NDSM into a leading area for creative industries in Amsterdam. To further the development into a high density urban area with a mix of uses including apartments, retail and recreation, a robust framework was designed to guide developments on water and land. Essential components are defined, but as much freedom as possible is left to guarantee a surprising and inspiring development of the shipyard.
