Reichstag (Parliament Building), Berlin
The German government wanted Parliament to sit in the historic Reichstag in Berlin. This plan won one of the three first prizes in the first round of the design competition to transform the historic and isolated Reichstag into the central component of a large-scale urban ensemble. Elevating the ground level frees up space and interconnects the buildings. The old building retains the main entrance for the complex and has been refurbished to accommodate offices and conference spaces. The chamber for Parliament’s plenary sessions is housed in a new, dish-shaped volume on the west side of the monumental building. A new presidential wing is situated on the north side.
