‘Schieland Tower’ residential complex, Rotterdam

This high-rise residential complex contrasts with the surrounding high-rise offices because of its slender profile and the unconventional use of red-brick façades. The metal bay windows give the building sharp angles and create its polygonal appearance. More than 100 metres tall, the tower is the crowning of the Beursplein complex, which accommodates residential and work functions as well as shops and recreational facilities. With its 32 storeys, the tower is part of the ‘architectural block’ on the south side of the Beursplein. This block accommodates several department stores, a shopping mall over three levels – the roof of which extends skyward towards the tower – and a car park.
