Markthof, Hoofddorp

Markthof is a functional mix of shops, offices, parking and housing replacing a worn-down existing shopping mall dating from the early 1980’s. The redevelopment of the center of Hoofddorp from sleepy village to bustling city center goes hand in hand with compaction and an increase in the building heights. Transforming an introverted mall into a diverse city block, Markthof plays an important role in the ambitious plan to transform this town centre into a vibrant downtown area with a pleasant atmosphere and mixed uses. Moreover, the approximately 250 new parking places makes it possible to bring back unwanted street parking in the central areas of Hoofddorp.

The set-up of Markthof creates an attractive interaction between the different functions of the complex. The block is accessible on three sides and contributes to the vibrancy of these main shopping streets, the Kruisweg, Marktlaan, and Marktplein. The retail spaces are located in the base providing all shops with direct access from the street, thus ensuring a varied elevation. The office spaces and apartments are located high above street level. The offices, a transparent steel and glass box, are a recognizable entrance to the center of Hoofddorp, while the parking garage is situated out of view, in the middle of the block above the retail units.
