‘Tricot’ residential complex, Winterswijk

The ‘Tricot’, an abandoned textile factory in Winterswijk, has been converted into a modern residential complex. The authentic industrial character was deployed as an irreplaceable added value. It is comprised of two buildings: the Spoelerij (dye house) and the Wilhelmina Building. The Spoelerij (1912) was one of the first structures in the Netherlands to make use of reinforced concrete. The quality of the exceptional concrete structure has been exploited to the full. The loft apartments have the original 3.5-metre ceilings and large cast-iron window frames, and the supporting structure has been left in full view. The Wilhelmina Building is a structure of brick and glass, a succession of component parts from various periods and in diverse architectural styles. The façade on the Wilhelminastraat can be read like catalogue of architectural history.

Notable features

  • Transformation of two battered textile factories into a unique residential complex forms a reference to a rich textile history.
  • The façade which shows the fragments can be read like a catalogue of architectural history.
  • The loft apartments enjoy the original 3.5-metre height, the bare supporting structures and cast-iron window frames.
  • The dwellings fit seamless into the existing form, and thanks to their arrangement around a central core they take optimum advantage of the available expanses of facade.
  • Internal verandas on east and west side allow for heat regain and make an outdoor with respect for monument.
  • First prize Architecture Trophy Achterhoek 2006
